Disney California Story Tour

by MTT Nancy, Nancy Julian

This tour is new, and just started in July, 2014. Being very interested in all things historical that involve Disney, I decided to take this tour. Held daily at Disney California Adventure at the Disneyland Resort, you meet up with your tour guide at the Chamber of Commerce located by the service station on the left hand side of the park, close to the entrance.

It was a little awkward for me to be the only guest on the day I took this tour, but I quickly overcame it and thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience.

You start off your tour in a lovely waiting room located in the Chamber of Commerce. There you will choose your lunch selection. Soon, off you go on a tour of the park, with great focus being on the re-imagined areas of the park’s ‘main street’ area, Buena Vista Street. Loaded with little bits of trivia and symbolism explained, this was very interesting. Part of the tour is an in depth look at 1901 Lounge, the private club that is sister to Club 33 in Disneyland, located next to Carthay Circle restaurant. I’ve been into 1901 twice and both times was told to not take photos. It seems others are never told this, and pictures abound of this lovely lounge. Just not from me. It is warm and classy and loaded with history. My favorite touch is the 4 director’s chairs at the bar named in tribute of the Disney founders.

Along the way, you will see the smallest hidden Mickey, find the only four leaf clover in Bug’s Land, and receive hints of other little goodies Imagineers added around the park.  You will bypass lines and ride two attractions, which are currently Soarin’ Over California and Radiator Springs Racers. You also visit the Animation Building and participate in the art class. Since I was the only guest on the tour, I was given the drawing by the animator teaching the class. Nice touch.

Your tour ends up at the Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Café, where your pre-ordered lunch and souvenir pin are waiting for you. I heartily recommend this tour. While on the tour, take time to talk to your guide off script. I was fascinated by his story and enjoyed little insider bits he shared. The tour is priced at $109. My Annual Pass took off 20%. DIY: Olaf Shirt

by MTT Keri, Keri Reyes

Frozen has taken over my house. My kids just can’t get enough. We listen to the soundtrack or watch the movie at least once a day. Can we say obsessed? The biggest problem we’ve had is finding Frozen merchandise. My daughter has been dying for any Olaf or Elsa items. My mom was lucky enough to snag an Elsa doll for her for Easter so all we needed was something Olaf! Since we haven’t been able to find anything I decided to take on the task myself and make a shirt! Here’s how…

The supplies:

  • White T-shirt
  • Fabric Paint in Black, Orange and white. (If you choose to write on the shirt pick which colors you like. I used Blazin’ Blue and the Neon Orange)
  • Pencil
  • Stencil of Olaf

Step one: Trace Olaf’s face on to the shirt.

Slide the cut out of Olaf’s face under into the shirt and trace away!

Step two: Start to paint his face.

Practice with the paint on a napkin by drawing a line or two. This will help you know how hard or soft you have to squeeze so you don’t get any splatter marks.

I started on the inside and worked my way out. If you do it this way you don’t have to worry about dragging your hand through paint and smudging it.

Step three (optional):  Write on the shirt

When I was done with Olaf’s face my daughter said she really wanted it to say “do you want to build a snowman” OR “I like warm hugs.” I decided “I Like warm hugs” Would probably be best for this shirt… Maybe another one is in my future ;)

Olaf finished shirt

The paint suggests letting the shirt dry for at least 4 hours and 72 hours before the first wash.

The total time was about a half hour and it was super easy. It was inexpensive and my daughter LOVES it. I’m going to make another for my son and give Elsa a shot. Who’s your favorite Frozen Character?

Movie Night: Mary Poppins

by MTT Nancy, Nancy Julian

Has Saving Mr. Banks renewed your interest in the classic Disney movie Mary Poppins? Invite friends and family over to celebrate this film with a tea party based movie night.

As guests arrive have them decorate your sidewalk or porch with their chalk drawings masterpieces. To further get in the mood they can make a kite magnet. Pre cut foam board into kite shapes and supply lots of paper and sparkle and bling and let creativity run free.

For refreshments, provide classic tea party treats, with a Poppins twist (recipes to follow).

I prepared Jolly Holiday Cranberry Citrus Scones with mock clotted cream, fruit kebobs with the picks decorated with umbrella cut outs, Spoonful of Sugar Cake Pops and Practically Perfect Peach Punch.

I printed out the song lyrics to Let’s Go Fly A Kite for a sing along during the movie and to take home, along with the kite magnets, bird seed tied up in net.  Feed the Birds was Walt Disney’s favorite song, so this is an appropriate reminder of all he went through to bring us this masterpiece.

Spoonful of Sugar Cake Pops: I used lemon poppy seed cake and lemon icing or the pops, dipped in coating and sprinkles and placed on antique spoons.

Practically Perfect Peach Punch: 1 quart of lemonade mixed with a can of peach nectar. Add frozen sliced peaches and mint before serving.

Jolly Holiday Cranberry Citrus Scones:

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup cold butter, cubed
  • ½ cup buttermilk (or regular milk with a bit of vinegar added to curdle)
  • 1/3 cup orange juice
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon grated orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
  • 1 teaspoon lemon extract
  • ¾ cup craisins

Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Combine the remaining ingredients and stir until crumb mixture is moistened. Turn onto floured surface and knead gently 5-6 times. Pat into 6 circles and transfer to greased baking sheets. Cut each circle into 8 wedges but do not separate. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes until lightly browned. Cool on wire rack.

Mock Clotted Cream:

Place 1/3 cup sour cream in a coffee filter, cover with plastic wrap, having wrap touch surface of sour cream. Allow to sit in refrigerator overnight to drain off liquid. The next day combine sour cream with 1 cup of Cool Whip.
