I am a total fan of cruising. What’s not to love…you can fill up your day with tons of exciting activites or just relax with a drink and a book poolside. There’s something for just about everyone depending on what cruise line you choose.
The one thing I did not like about cruising in the past, was skipping my workouts, particularly Zumba. (I am a certified Zumba Instructor and Licensed Aerobic and Fitness Group Instructor). Sure, there is a gym with treadmills and free weights. Most cruises also offer fitness classes that you must sign up for well in advance that is an additional cost to their passengers. But, the FUN and Party atmosphere of a Zumba class was still missing. That is, until I was chosen (through an audition process) to teach this past February 10-17, 2013 on the Celebrity Silhouette.
A typical day consisted of one class in the morning and one later in the afternoon. Morning classes were always held by the pool before it began to heat up. What better way to start the day off, glistening blue water all around, dancing your cares and the calories away! Afternoon classes took place mostly indoors due to the heat, although we did “tough” it out the first day and merengued on the basketball court! Class sizes ranged from 25-55 people depending on if it was a Sea day or Port day and what other activities were going on at the same time. I can’t tell you how many participants were on the “side-lines” just checking it out! I would glance over and notice them shaking it every now and then. Hey, it’s Zumba, it’s a Party, it’s infectious! The classes offered on this particular cruise were offered as no additional cost to their passengers and the time and locations of all classes were listed in the Daily Compass. My very first class was videotaped and snippets of it played throughout the cruise and was promoted during the week.
Zumba uses very few verbal cues and lots of hand cueing which makes it a wonderful activity for a cruise… it can be taught, understood and enjoyed by people of all nationalities. I truly enjoyed meeting people from all over the world and the only thing we had in common was our love for music. I was truly blessed to be able to have the opportunity to teach during this cruise and met a lot of wonderful people. When I returned home there were email messages waiting for me from my participants letting me know how much the Zumba classes added to their cruising experience. Most said they had never tried Zumba and were looking forward to taking classes at home.
If you are planning a cruise in the near future, check to see if Zumba is part of the daily activities. Go and try out a class or two and I promise, you will LOVE it! And… you just may still fit into your clothes at the end of the week. ;)
